The most realistic depiction of the horrors of nuclear war and its aftermath was brought to screens over forty years ago, and it remains a masterpiece to this day—albeit a largely forgotten one. Originally broadcast on BBC Two on September 23, 1984, the sci-fi film delivers a dramatized account of the potential medical, economic, social, and environmental consequences of a nuclear war in Britain. It has been widely perceived to be deeply disturbing, offers little to no hope, and certainly doesn't end the way viewers might expect.
