Matt Damon‘s The Odyssey fulfills one of Christopher Nolan‘s lifelong dreams. A new featurette gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of Nolan’s Greek epic.
Why does The Odyssey fulfill a lifelong dream for Christopher Nolan?
Christopher Nolan is known as a meticulous director who blends reality with his creativity. His new work on The Odyssey was created with the idea of making the film as realistic as possible. This is why the entire movie was shot on customised IMAX cameras, which has been a lifelong dream for Nolan.
In the featurette, he states, “For me, it’s been my long-held dream, since I was about 16 years old, to do an entire film on IMAX. The thing that was stopping us was always the sound.”
Previously, he used IMAX cameras to shoot parts of a movie. These include The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet.
Initially, filming with IMAX cameras was “loud” and “distracting” for the cast and crew. To tackle this, the production team went to IMAX and “challenged” them for customised cameras that were quiet or a “blimp to baffle the noise of the camera”, according to the producer, Emma Thomas. IMAX got back to them with not only new cameras but also a blimp, as seen in the featurette.
The new camera was heavier than usual, but as Hoyte Van Hoytema, the director of photography, put it, “As filmmakers, we’re not supposed to be comfortable. We’re supposed to present the audience with the best experience possible,” a vision held by Nolan himself.
