The latest update for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a great sign for fans, and It proves the show is learning from Game of Thrones’ biggest mistake.
The Rings of Power Season 3 is still months away, but Amazon already has plans for more stories. A THR report states that The Rings of Power’s UK-based production is “eyeing a schedule” that includes a preproduction start date in the fall of 2026. Shooting would then begin in early 2027. Season 4 has not been greenlit by Amazon.
The Rings of Power Season 3 premieres on Prime Video on November 11, 2026. The Rings of Power has come out every two years since 2022. If Season 4 films in 2027, then it’s safe to say the show should air in 2028.
Why the latest The Rings of Power update is a win for fans
The Season 4 update is encouraging for the future of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. When Amazon acquired the rights from the Tolkien Estate for a LOTR television show, the initial plan was for the show to run for five seasons while leaving the door open for spin-off series.
So far, Amazon has held up their end of the bargain. The studio continues to back The Rings of Power by investing in more seasons. More importantly, Amazon is allowing showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay to take their time and craft the story they want to tell. The streamer has not rushed future seasons, nor have they been delayed. It’s been a consistent schedule of shooting one year and releasing it the next.
Amazon showing patience with The Rings of Power and allowing the show to finish the story on its terms is something Game of Thrones could have benefited from. To its credit, HBO released a new season of Game of Thrones every year from 2011 through 2017. The show then went on hiatus for nearly two years before it returned in April 2019 for a shortened final season.
As we all know, the final season of Game of Thrones disappointed many fans. Despite the hiatus between Seasons 7 and 8, the ending felt rushed. It seemed like everyone involved wanted to move on, including creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who had already signed a deal to work on new Star Wars movies.
As long as Amazon doesn’t change its release strategy, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is trending toward a satisfying conclusion.
