Early predictions for the 2026 Emmys show that a Netflix movie is an overwhelming favorite to win a golden statue at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2025, Netflix won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie for the action thriller Rebel Ridge, which triumphed over The Gorge, Mountainhead, Nonnas, and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. While the nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards have not been announced — the voting round for nominations starts on June 11 and the nominations themselves will be revealed on July 8 — it looks like Netflix will win one more time in the category.
The 2026 Emmy for Outstanding TV Movie has a clear frontrunner
Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures is the heavy favorite to take home the Emmy for Outstanding TV Movie in 2026, based on a Kalshi prediction market (as of May 14).
The mystery drama is an adaptation of the bestselling 2022 book of the same name, written by Shelby Van Pelt, and stars Sally Field as the cleaning lady Tova Sullivan who works at an aquarium and talks to the giant Pacific octopus Marcellus, who serves as the narrator of the film. She meets the wayward young man Cameron Cassmore, played by Outer Range’s Lewis Pullman, who comes to town looking for family. The nearly two-hour movie released on the subscription service on May 8.
The full list of options for the bet reveal that the film has many competitors, but they all have a large hill to climb to overtake the leader.
Remarkably Bright Creatures – 51% Deep Cover – 13% The Thursday Murder Club – 12% Swiped – 9% Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man – 7%* Happy Gilmore 2 – 6% Echo Valley – 5% A Winter’s Song – 4% Straw – 4% Tie – 4%* The Best You Can – Less than 1%(The * denotes that the percentage is displayed as “–%” on Kalshi, so it is based on its current trading graph.)
Per usual, it’s important to take these early predictions with a grain of salt. The official list of nominations has not been settled yet, so there could be options here that aren’t mentioned. In particular, the early 2026 Emmy predictions from Variety include three movies that are absent in this bet: HBO Max’s Miss You, Love You; Netflix’s People We Meet on Vacation; and Hulu’s Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice. And then of course, there’s plenty of time before the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards airs on September 14, 2026, on NBC and Peacock, so the percentages have a high chance of changing as we get closer to the show.
The history of the bet shows that Hulu’s Swiped, a biographical film of Bumble’s CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd as played by Lily James, was tied with Remarkably Bright Creatures at the start of the bet. But the Netflix movie sharply grabbed the lead in late April. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime’s action comedy Deep Cover and Netflix’s crime comedy The Thursday Murder Club have been largely consistent across the duration of the bet.
Remarkably Bright Creatures has several notable advantages over the competition. Not only did Variety mark the movie as the potential winner in the category, but the film enjoys a “Certified Fresh” title on Rotten Tomatoes. As of May 14, it holds a 82% critics rating based on 56 reviews and an even higher 90% audience rating.
That said, it doesn’t have as high of a score on Metacritic where it has a “mixed or average” critics score of 57, so there is room for another television movie to sneak in ahead of it. On that front, some competition could come from the drama Miss You, Love You that comes out on May 29 on HBO Max and the comedy Never Change that releases on June 17 on Hulu.
