Watch Kong: Skull Island on HBO Max today as it leaves soon
Kong: Skull Island, starring Tom Hiddleston, will reportedly no longer be available on HBO Max starting tomorrow, May 20, 2026 (via Collider). Thus, subscribers have only one day left to stream it before it leaves the platform.
A reboot of the King Kong franchise, the film is the second installment in the Monsterverse series. Accordingly, it shares continuity with other films such as Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Skull Island premiered in theaters on March 10, 2017. Following its release, it found significant box office success, grossing approximately $568.7 million against an estimated budget of $185 million.
Besides becoming a financial success, it also performed well with critics and audiences. This is reflected in its strong scores on review aggregator websites. On Rotten Tomatoes, Skull Island has a “certified fresh” approval rating of 75% and a slightly lower audience score of 70%.
Meanwhile, on Metacritic, the film has been assigned a Metascore of 62 and a user score of 6.7, both of which indicate “generally favorable” reception.
Set in 1973, the narrative follows a team of scientists and Vietnam War veterans. They undertake a research expedition to Skull Island, an uncharted island located in the Pacific Ocean. During the expedition, they encounter multiple monsters native to the region, including the gigantic Kong.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts directed the film from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, Max Borenstein, and Derek Connolly. Meanwhile, John Gatins developed the story. Alex Garcia, Jon Jashni, Mary Parent, and Thomas Tull served as producers.
In addition to Hiddleston, the film features fellow Marvel actors Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson. Supporting cast members include John C. Reilly, John Goodman, Corey Hawkins, John Ortiz, Tian Jing, Toby Kebbell, Terry Notary, Jason Mitchell, Shea Whigham, and Thomas Mann.
