The long-awaited second season of X-Men ’97 is already a smashing success, and it’s barely even begun. Disney+ dropped the first three episodes of the season a few days ago, setting up the X-Men’s time displacement, their replacement in their own time, and the rising threat of Apocalypse. But critics are already hailing this season as another masterpiece, and fans are already hyping it up as a worthy successor to season 1. Much like its predecessor, X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ’97 strikes a nice balance between dazzling superhero spectacle and soapy interpersonal melodrama. It’s a fun comic book adventure, but it also deals with really dark, heavy themes.
