Donald Trump reportedly called Benjamin Netanyahu “fucking crazy” after Israel resumed its aerial bombardment of Lebanon.

The US president blew his top at the Israeli prime minister in a heated phone call between the pair on Monday, according to the Axios website.

The Israeli military has struck Beirut twice since a ceasefire between the two countries came into force on 16 April, with the most strikes coming last Thursday.

A source told Axios that Trump told Netanyahu: “You’re fucking crazy. You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your ass. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this.”

Another source said Trump was “pissed” on the phone call and at one point shouted at Netanyahu: “What the fuck are you doing?”

The president fears that a resumption of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the terror group which is based in Lebanon, could scupper his attempts to end the Iran war.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had managed to persuade Netanyahu to stop the bombing.

He said: “I had a conversation with Bibi Netanyahu today, asking him not to go into a major raid of Beirut, Lebanon. He turned his Troops around. Thank you Bibi!

“I also had a conversation with Representatives of the Leaders of Hezbollah, and they agreed to stop shooting at Israel, and its soldiers. Likewise, Israel agreed to stop shooting at them. Let’s see how long that lasts — Hopefully it will be for ETERNITY!”

However, Netanyahu said Israel reserved the right to retaliate “if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and civilians”.
