The longtime teacher, activist and Harvard graduate left behind a legacy that reached far beyond raising two Academy Award-winning actors, touching generations through education and public service.

Chris Anne Affleck’s family announced that she died peacefully in her sleep on June 2 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December (via The Hollywood Reporter). According to the family, doctors had given her about six months to live. Before her passing, she fulfilled what they described as her biggest wish, attending grandson Atticus’ high school graduation on May 31, surrounded by loved ones.
Born Christine Anne Boldt in New York City in 1942, Affleck carved out a life defined by service. A Harvard graduate, she chose public education over more lucrative careers and spent 35 years teaching elementary school students.
Her commitment to equality stretched well beyond the classroom. During the civil rights movement, she participated in Freedom Summer literacy efforts in Mississippi and later remained involved in causes such as community organizing. Her obituary described a woman who celebrated curiosity, kindness, and standing up for others.
Chris Affleck left her mark on Hollywood without ever stepping into the spotlight herself. After her separation from Timothy Affleck, she stood firmly behind Ben and Casey as they chased acting careers.
One of Ben’s first big breaks came because his mother introduced him to her former Harvard roommate, casting director Patty Collins, who helped him land some of his earliest commercial and TV auditions.
Even after both sons became stars, Chris preferred cheering from the sidelines. She was by Ben’s side at the 1998 Oscars when Good Will Hunting won Best Original Screenplay. Years later, Ben remembered celebrating the victory beside their mothers, saying he never understood why bringing them to the Oscars was considered unusual. “I remember thinking, being insecure, like, ‘Why? Why is it weird that we’re bringing our moms?’ Who else do you think we would bring?”
