EastEnders’ Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) and Mark Fowler Jr (Stephen Aaron-Sipple) may not have the most conventional father-son relationship, but Grant makes the ultimate sacrifice for his boy next week, as his latest stint in Walford comes to a dramatic end.
Ross Kemp reprised his role as the beloved character last month as Nigel Bates’ (Paul Bradley) dementia storyline reached its emotional end, and since then, we’ve seen Grant trying – and failing – to bond with Mark.
Grant has gone to all sorts of lengths to try and get his estranged son onside, but in trying to help him with his problems with gangland boss Russell, his actions ultimately ended up getting Mark kidnapped and held to ransom.
Meanwhile, Mark has also been doing all sorts of dodgy dealings with Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), selling on stolen vehicles at the car lot to raise cash.
This week, we also saw Mark contemplate robbing the car lot safe in an attempt to pay off his debts to Russell – and while he stopped short of thieving, he dropped his keys to No. 55, which, upon finding them, piqued Max Branning’s (Jake Wood) suspicions.
Next week, Max keeps a close eye on Lauren when she takes delivery of another car, and later tries the keys he found in the door of No.55, sharing his suspicions with Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins).
Mitchell siblings Grant, Sam (Kim Medcalf) and Phil (Steve McFadden) confront Max on the doorstep and dismiss his claims. But Max later goes public with his suspicions about Mark at the unveiling of the new car lot name, believing he has definitive proof of what he’s been up to.
To everyone’s surprise, Grant steps forward and claims responsibility in order to protect his Mark.
Will it finally help build bridges between father and son?
Either way, Grant’s time on the Square is running out, with Sam suggesting she and Grant head back to Portugal together.
That plan then gathers pace when Lauren tips off the Mitchells that Max has called the police…
Will Grant make a clean getaway, or is he destined to do time for Mark’s crimes?
