Remake of Iconic Johnny Depp & Leonardo DiCaprio Movie Sets Premiere Date

The remake of an acclaimed movie starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio finally has a release timeline. The new adaptation will neither be a movie nor a TV series. This comes more than three decades after the original adaptation, which earned DiCaprio his first Oscar nomination.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape musical adaptation gets an Off-Broadway premiere date

The 1993 movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is being adapted into a stage musical. The musical will have its world premiere Off-Broadway in June 2027 at the Newman Mills Theater in New York, as part of MCC Theater’s 40th-anniversary season.

The Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio movie was based on Peter Hedges’ 1991 eponymous novel. The story follows Gilbert Grape, a grocery store clerk living in the fictional town of Endora, Iowa. He struggles to balance his own dreams while caring for his intellectually disabled younger brother, obese mother, and two sisters. The musical will be a fresh take on the beloved story.

Hedges is returning to write the musical’s script. Meanwhile, the indie-Americana group Bandits on the Run (consisting of Adrian Enscoe, Sydney Shepherd, Regina Strayhorn) and Christopher Sears will compose the music and write the lyrics. Anne Kauffman will direct the production.

MCC Theater also announced two other productions for its 2026–27 season lineup. The first is Anon – a tempest at our kitchen table by Anne Washburn. It opens on October 13, 2026. The second is The Heart Sellers by Lloyd Suh, arriving in January 2027.

The movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape received a limited release, opening in theaters on December 17, 1993. Upon release, it garnered a favorable reception but was a major box-office failure. It ended its theatrical run with just over $9.1 million against a $11 million budget.

Over the years, however, it has earned a high score on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with a 90% critics’ score and an 89% user score. The cast also includes Juliette Lewis, Darlene Cates, Laura Harrington, and Mary Kate Schellhardt, among others.
