Screen legend Tom Hanks has opened up about what fans can expect from the upcoming fifth Toy Story movie.

The two-time Oscar winner reprises his role as Sheriff Woody in Toy Story 5, which it was previously revealed would explore the role of technology in young people’s lives.

While the Toy Story movies are known for plucking at viewers’ heartstrings (we don’t think we’ll ever be over the double-punch of the toys fearing for their lives followed by Andy’s emotional farewell in the third one), Tom told The Hollywood Reporter that the new iteration features “one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever seen” in any of the films.

He explained: “These movies, they end up [addressing] stuff that everybody is thinking anyway. There’s one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever seen in any of the Toy Story movies – when that little girl is getting her feelings hurt by what other people are texting about her, and she doesn’t understand why.

“She doesn’t know what she did wrong, but it hurts.”

Tom added: “That is a very prescient thing to have in a motion picture today about little kids and toys, don’t you think?”

Toy Story 5 is due to hit cinemas later this month, more than 30 years after the original film’s release.

Reflecting this, Woody’s appearance will have changed in this new chapter in the story, with fans spotting a “bald spot” on the back of the character’s head, as well as changes to his physique.

“He has been played with to excess,” Tom told Entertainment Weekly in April. “You put a rubber hat on top of a rubber head again and again and again and again, something’s gonna chafe. So, yeah, he does have… let’s say a worn area on the back of his head.”

Tom also claimed: “He is not shaped plastic. He is made of stuffing and cloth, and that stuff settles over time.”

Toy Story 5 hits cinemas on Friday 19 June.
