What Ethan Hawke movie is returning to theaters?
‘Boyhood,’ a critically acclaimed film, is returning to theaters nationwide for its 12th anniversary. The film was widely praised by critics, in part because Linklater filmed it over 12 years.
The movie was released in 2014, spanning over 12 years of filming with the same cast. It received a total score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, the film, which was made on a budget of approximately $4 million, grossed more than $57 million worldwide during its theatrical run.
Boyhood was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress for Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, respectively.

For its 12th anniversary, Boyhood will return to theaters nationwide on July 31. A reunion event featuring the cast will take place on July 18, 2026, including Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Lorelei Linklater, and Ellar Coltrane.
The premiere before its theatrical release will take place at the Austin Film Society in Texas. This event will feature a red carpet as well as a live Q&A with the cast.
To celebrate the re-release of Boyhood on its 12th anniversary, a new poster was released. It captures the six-year-old Mason who started this 12-year-long journey alongside the adult version of himself.
Just like the film’s title claims, Richard Linklater captures the coming-of-age story of Mason Jr., played by Ellar Coltrane. As Mason grows from age six into a college student, we also see the growth, shortcomings, and transformations of the adults in Mason’s life.
